In ancient times the vast teachings of the Buddha migrated out of India to the north, south, east and west and emerged in 6th century CE Japan, having arrived from across the sea and the Korean Peninsula. As we travel on Pilgrimage to this land of finely layered nuance and exquisite beauty, our journey will open the secret treasuries of dharma and culture that permeate Japan's ancient architecture, mountain retreats and daily life.
Traveling together in Junrei, the Japanese term for Pilgrimage, we fly into Osaka and on to Kyoto, the ancient capital and city of a thousand temples. We visit Arashiyama, where the Tale of Genji was written and walk through a bamboo forest to the hut of Basho. Then on to the ancient Shingon Temples on Mount Koyasan, the extraordinary forest cemetery where Kukai is in eternal samadhi, a walking meditation on the legendary ancient pilgrimage island of Shikoku, the famed Dogo Onsen hot mineral bath in Matsuyama, the Peace Park at Hiroshima and a two-day meditation retreat and night mountain walk, kaihogyo, with the Shugendo marathon monks on Mt Hei.
Exquisite cuisine and relaxing hot baths are all part of our amazing Pilgrimage experience.
Buddhist Pilgrimage to Japan Dates: May 1-14, 2008 Cost: $5,950.00 (based on a group of 10 people or more)
