The Pilgrimages
Mount Kailas: Center of the Mandala
ItineraryReservations

Jewel of Snow, Mont Meru, Gang Rinpoche, Tisa – all names for the great mythological mountain, Kailas. The axis-mundi of traditional Buddhist cosmology, Kailas has reigned for millennia as the most sacred of mountains for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Bonpos.

Rising up from the Tibetan Plateau, Kailas stands monolithically isolated at the center of the Trans-Himalayan range, and has attracted hearty, devout pilgrims from across Asia for countless centuries.

Our month-long expedition will begin in Central Tibet, where we will visit the sacred sites of Lhasa, Gyantse and Shigatse before setting off across Western Tibet to Kailas. The culmination of this journey will be a challenging three-day trek or "Parikrama" around the base of this giant mountain.
